Bears president won't comment on future of HC Matt Eberflus

The Chicago Bears have some big decisions to make this offseason, and the future of head coach Matt Eberflus will be high on that list. Even though there has been speculation on his future, Bears team president Kevin Warren was not prepared to speculate when asked about it on Friday.

That type of answer tends to speak volumes, and if the Bears were committed to bringing him back they probably would have come out and said as much. That sort of non-answer tends to precede some sort of change that the team simply does not want to announce before the season officially ends. It is not a given, of course, but the lack of commitment is a little eye-opening.

This is Eberflus' second year as the Bears head coach and they are headed for a second losing record no matter what they do against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. They did, however, improve significantly from last year's three-win season and have shown serious improvement down the stretch, especially after acquiring defensive lineman Montez Sweat in a trade deadline deal with the Washington Commanders.

Going into Sunday the Bears are 5-2 in their past seven games and have a chance to play the role of spoiler against a Packers team that needs a win to make the playoffs.

If Chicago wins and gets to eight wins that would be a five-game improvement from year one to year two under Eberflus.

Along with the head coaching decision, the Bears will also need to decide what to do with quarterback Justin Fields and whether or not to trade the No. 1 overall pick (which they will receive from the Carolina Panthers as part of last year's trade for the Bears' No. 1 overall pick). The decision on the pick will ultimately come down to what they do with Fields.

If they decide to stick with Fields, it makes trading the pick seem more likely. If they decide that Fields is not the answer, it would seem to be a given that they would keep the pick and select a quarterback. All of those decisions will make for another fascinating offseason in Chicago.
